Birds of Chicago

8:00 pm Birds of Chicago have been riding a swell of good mojo in the American world since their inception in late 2012. With their new album, Love in Wartime, they are set to both confirm that roots world buzz, and break on through to a wider audience across the world. Recorded in Chicago against a backdrop of bewilderment, deep-divide and dread, Love in Wartime is a rock and roll suite with a cinematic sweep. Co-produced by Nero and Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars), it evokes epic efforts of the 60s and 70s, with love as the undeniable throughline. As Russell puts it, -Any act of love is an act of bravery. These songs are snapshots of covenants, big and small, of trust and understanding. We want to give people some good news, and we want them to be able to dance when they hear it.- When BOC released its last album, the Joe Henry produced Real Midnight, in 2016, critics scrambled to find the right terminology to describe the deep lyricism, gut-punch singing and fevered musicality. . . -Secular gospel- Was one phrase that caught some traction. That fervor is evident in Love in Wartime as well: -Roll Away the heavy stone/roll away the heavy hours/roll on in the summer mon/whos alive whos alive whos alive- The invitation is joyous, but urgent. . . call it -secular gospel,- or call it what they used to call poetry intoned over roots music mash-ups: rock n roll. The Birds consider themselves a rock and roll band first and foremost, and Love in Wartime doesn’t leave any doubt about that. The Birds attract a mix of indy rockers, NPRists, jam-kids and folkies to their gigs, which alternate between moments of hushed attention and wild, rock and soul abandon. Says JT Nero, chief songwriter for the band, -A good show can send you back out into the night feeling–for at least a little while–that everything isn’t broken. . .Right now, we wanna dose out as much of that feeling as we can.-

Waxahatchee with Night Shop and Anna St. Louis

8:00 pm Floor Seats: $21/advance $26/door Balcony Seats: $18/advance $23/door Box Seats: $26/advance $31/door Stuarts Opera House is excited to welcome an evening of music from three amazing acts. Out in the Storm, Katie Crutchfields fourth album as Waxahatchee and her second release with Merge, is the blazing result of a woman reawakened. NIGHT SHOP Night Shop is the new solo project from Justin Sullivan, drummer for such people and bands as: Kevin Morby, The Babies, and Flat Worms. They are preceded by many more, as he has toured in bands for the past 18 years. His debut e.p. was recorded at Compny Studios in Los Angeles, engineered by Drew Fisher (Kevin Morby, The Babies, Girl Pool) and is comprised of world weary, melancholy songs with trace elements of optimism. He was joined in the recording effort by Will Ivy, on electric guitar, and Tim Hellman (Thee Oh Sees) on bass. ANNA ST. LOUIS Despite her last name, Anna St. Louis was born and raised in Kansas City. She grew up a painter and singing in punk bands, eventually leaving her hometown to attend art school in Philadelphia. After graduating she made the move to Los Angeles where she began teaching herself guitar, writing songs and recording them on her own in her bedroom. First Songs is the sound of someone discovering their talent in real time – a peak into the collage of a wonderful mind that is absorbing their new surroundings and using new tools to put them into the room. Listening to this collection you can feel the sun coming in through the window – Anna on the foot of the bed with a guitar on her knee, finding her voice. St. Louis wears her influences well – think Patsy Cline singing over John Fahey – but has a style all her own. And while you can take the artist out of the midwest, you cant take the midwest out of the artist – so let this be known; this is Midwestern music ran through a California filter.

Bonnie Prince Billy

7:30 pm Box: $38/advance $43/door Floor: $33/advance $38/door Balcony: $28/advance $33/door The Other Years will open the show. The man who acts under the name Will Oldham and sings and composes under the name Bonnie “Prince” Billy has, over the past quarter-century, made an idiosyncratic journey through, and an indelible mark on, the worlds of indie rock and independent cinema. With his highly individualistic approach to music making and the music industry, one that cherishes intimacy, community, mystery, and spontaneity; his brilliance has captivated fans and made Bonny one of our most influential and beloved songsmiths. Recent projects in 2016 include the collaborative LP with Bitchin Bajas (EPIC JAMMERS AND FORTUNATE LITTLE DITTIES); a split 7″ with Oscar Lee Riley Parsons; numerous performances with neo-classical ensemble 8th Blackbird; a collection of recordings, POND SCUM, made over the years under the auspices of John Peel’s BBC radio program; and co-writing and performing “The Dragon Song” in Disney’s PETE’S DRAGON movie. 2017 will find Bonny performing with Bitchin Bajas, Eighth Blackbird, in addition to rare and scattered solo shows. Woo, boy! Summer is finally here and what a time to be alive, in the midst of a streaming roll out for the ages. See, since April, each week has brought another year from the Palace-Oldham-Bonny universe to streaming life chronologically, allowing worldwide streaming audiences the chance to join the BPB congregation en masse. It’s a common theme around these Drag City parts —ye old “Prince” giving and giving, happily bestowing upon your feeble, non-physical-buying, formless being. Just next weekend, he’s taking the solo show route for the first time, in, well, a long time! But Bonny’s boundless gifts don’t end there; beginning in the deep dog days of Summer the Prince and his ensemble–the Wandering All-Stars & Motor Royalty–are headed on the road again. Bonnie will be passing through the Southeast for a pair of public lectures at Duke University (oh, to be a fly on that wall!) as well as a special Bonnie performance before heading off on a proper tour with stops in the Midwest and Northeast. Early October will also see the release of Songs of Love and Horror, the definitive collection of Will Oldham’s lyrics—spanning three decades of songwriting with annotations that impart new meaning to his music. Copies of the book will be available at every show, this musical and literary combination is not to be missed. It’s been years since you’ve had the option to see Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy RAW: live, uncensored and in intimate settings, so hop to it! THE OTHER YEARS The Other Years from Louisville, Kentucky are a duet born from a sister friendship, two friendly vines headed up the same tree. Their voices combine in many forms, embarking on a journey of song writing influenced by the old time tradition.

Amy Ray

7:00 pm Box: $27/advance $32/door Floor: $22/advance $27/door Amy Ray teamed up with Emily Saliers while in high school, and soon the duo became a staple in the Atlanta music scene. In 1981, their independent music career began with a basement recording called Tuesdays Children. One thing led to another, and they signed with Epic Records in 1988. Despite almost polar-opposite styles, they met on the common ground of harmony and the love of meaningful music. Ray brought fire and earth, Saliers the wind and water. The alchemy proved magical, and their brand of folk-rock hit at just the right time alongside the successes of Tracy Chapman, Suzanne Vega, and 10,000 Maniacs. Inspired by the music of the Southern punk/indie rock scene, Ray embarked on a solo adventure in 2000. Traveling around the Southeast with guitar and amp in tow, she wrote, rehearsed, and recorded Stag, teaming up with The Butchies, The RockATeens, Danielle Howle, and 1945, with a quick stop in NYC to play with Joan Jett, Kate Schellenbach, and Josephine Wiggs. Stag hit the streets in March 2001, and changed her trajectory from that point on. The depths and intensity of her artistry and emotions are revealed in awe-inspiring punk performances on its ten songs, giving Ray a forum to more fully express her political stances and questions of self. Stag was followed by the similarly themed Prom in 2005. Ray issued Live from Knoxville in 2007. Following several well-received Indigo Girls albums, she released the introspective solo offering Didnt It Feel Kinder in 2008, MVP Live in 2010, and Lung of Love in early 2012 – all on Daemon. The latter contained guest vocal spots from Brandi Carlile and My Morning Jackets Jim James. In early 2014, Ray released Goodnight Tender, her first country album. Guests on the set of tunes include Bon Ivers Justin Vernon, and Susan Tedeschi. Her current release is a live record from a 2014 show at Seattles Triple Door theater, a riff on Goodnight Tender, The Tender Hour covers songs from her country record plus her earlier releases with her stellar and versatile band. Amy Ray and her bands new country album, Holler will be released on September 28, 2018. It was recorded live to tape at her mainstay Echo Mountain Studio in Asheville, NC, with the added power and swagger of horns and strings that harken back to the country music of the late 60s. Holler features special guests: Alison Brown on banjo, Kofi Burbridge on keys, Derek Trucks on guitar; Vince Gill, Brandi Carlile, The Wood Brothers, Justin Vernon, Lucy Wainwright Roche and Phil Cook on harmonies. Amy and her band will be hitting the road throughout the Fall of 2018 and beyond. Amythyst Kiah opens the show. A professed Southern Gothic songster based in Johnson City, TN, Amythyst Kiahs commanding stage presence is only matched by her raw and powerful vocals—a deeply moving, hypnotic sound that stirs echoes of a distant and restless past. A graduate of East Tennessee State University, she studied old time music and music performance, and it proved to be a pivotal moment in her life as she transformed from a long-time closet musician into a well-rounded, captivating performer.
