Santa Train

Our longest-running annual event, the Santa Train has been a long-standing family tradition for over three decades! These ever-popular trains begin Saturday, November 30th and continue each Saturday and Sunday through Sunday, December 22nd. Two trains depart the Nelsonville Depot round-trip to East Logan each Saturday and Sunday during that time at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. We will also have an evening departure time of 6:00 p.m. on Friday, December 6th, 13th, and 20th. Each train features the same theme–Santa gets on board the train and visits with each child as the train traverses the historic (and with any luck, snow-covered) Hocking River Valley. Each coach is decorated, heated, Christmas music plays throughout the train over the audio system, and after Santa’s visit, each child receives a special candy cane treat! Make sure your child or grandchild brings his or her list to share with Santa! These are incredibly popular and do tend to sell out, so order as early as possible to secure your spot! Duration of ride: Approximately two hours

Cost: $16-$21 per person

Athens Asylum Walking Tours

This is an outdoor walking tour and will cover the entire loop of the grounds including the cemeteries so if you have small children, bring a stroller. George Eberts, an expert on the history of the Athens Asylum or -The Ridges,- will lead an outdoor walking tour of the asylum grounds. The tour will last approximately two hours. Due to Ohio University restrictions, access to the inside of the buildings is limited, but you can tour the main entryway seen in the picture as well as the Kennedy Museum. Athens-Asylum-Administration-Building-1905, George will captivate you with his depth of knowledge as well as tell you the real stories of what life was like for the residents, as well as the employed, at the Asylum. Hear about the resident Alligator, look at the names left carved into the woodwork and hear the sad tale of the -lost lady.- Your tour guide will fascinate you with how the -Lunatic- Asylum began as well as educate you on the history of mental health and psychiatry that made the Athens Asylum one of the largest in Ohio. All regularly scheduled tours are held on Sunday afternoons and start from the main steps of the Kennedy center located at the top of North Ridge Drive. 100 Ridges Circle is the address for Garmin and navigation tools.
